Dry dog food sold in the U.S. contains higher levels of certain ultra-trace minerals than the average human diet, according to a Cornell University study. The research tested 49 kibble brands and found aluminum, chromium, and molybdenum concentrations exceeding daily human intake in most samples.

Scientists analyzed kibble from veterinary centers, pet stores, and grocery chains. Results were normalized to 1,000 kilocalories of metabolizable energy for comparison. Chromium levels, for instance, were about 30 times higher than in a 2,900-calorie human diet. Molybdenum reached 15 times that amount in one sample and surpassed estimated requirements in the others. Aluminum exceeded human intake in 46 of the 49 foods, with one brand measuring 38 times higher.

Regulation gaps leave pet food safety unclear

No agency regulates ultra-trace minerals in pet food. The National Research Council and the Association of American Feed Control Officials do not set limits for aluminum, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, or silica. These elements occur naturally in ingredients but are not added intentionally. While the levels appear safe for dogs, long-term effects remain unknown.

High chromium can damage the liver and cause gastroenteritis. Nickel may irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Silica has been tied to bladder stones in some breeds. Aluminum, though toxic, was found well below levels used in kidney disease treatments.

The team urged further study on how these minerals are absorbed and what amounts are safe. Such research is unlikely, since it would require inducing toxicity to the point of ill effect in dogs and cats.

Broader issues with dry pet food take priority

While the study examined ultra-trace minerals, larger problems with kibble demand attention. A better option is a nutritionally balanced, species-appropriate diet of fresh food.

The lead author noted that dogs may face higher mineral exposure due to their metabolism and common pet food ingredients. Without further research, the impact remains uncertain. The findings highlight the need to examine even minor components of pet food, though more pressing issues take precedence.
