A fourth beluga from the former Marineland facility has died following relocation to an American aquarium. Osiris, a 26-year-old female, passed away on a Monday morning at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.
She was one of 30 belugas moved out of Marineland in Canada this summer. Osiris had been a “whale of clinical concern” since she arrived in late July, according to Shedd Aquarium.
Staff found it difficult to maintain Osiris’s health because she often failed to consume adequate food. She was given fluids and medicine, and her interest in food had been growing.
However, early on Monday, staff observed sudden shifts in her behavior and respiration. Osiris was transferred to a medical ward, but she deteriorated rapidly and succumbed despite rescue efforts.
A necropsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. This marks the fourth beluga from Marineland to pass away this summer following relocation, joining Peekachu, 23, and Rain, 20, who also died at Shedd.
Previously, Jelly Bean, 19, perished at Oceanogràfic València in Spain due to eating difficulties. These fatalities have sparked worry regarding the overall health of Marineland’s whales.
Canadian government records and statements indicate that 19 belugas and one orca passed away at Marineland between 2019 and 2025. Andrew Trites, a marine mammal researcher for the Associated Press, noted his worry that four relocated whales died so soon.
Marineland suspended public visits in 2024 and cited financial trouble for being unable to maintain its remaining marine life. The company had warned Canadian officials that its 30 belugas and four dolphins might be euthanized without approval to move them abroad.
